New Year's: A Time of Change, A Time of Reflection, and A Time for TRUE Intention!
Manda Dougherty

Ah yes, The New Year is on it's way and it's coming fast. My least favorite part of the approaching day is all of the Resolutions! Now don't get me wrong, I love that people want to make some changes in their lives and get back into being in shape and anything else they feel they should delve themselves into, but the problem with this is resolutions are usually out the window within the first couple weeks, not to mention the intention may not be sincere behind it.

Perhaps, you hear everyone else is going to get back into the gym, or memberships are being renewed and you can't find a dang treadmill for the first week of January. Perhaps, people have made some goals to remove the "toxic" habits, addictions or people in their lives. Realizing they are involved in the same patterns by the 3rd of month. It's a tricky hyped up battle that seems to come into play each year.

Here's my gist on it. We lose sight of the pure intention behind what we really NEED and want. We just set something because it seems to be what we should be giving into. What we need to realize is the year past probably had some awesome moments, surely didn't go the way you planned, maybe it was one of the most painful, maybe you got the promotion then realized -hmm nothings changed, perhaps the pocket is still empty and it's the 1st of January and you are still considering how you will make rent, there are many factors that may be coming into focus.

You are still just recovering from the craziness of the holidays, perhaps the stress of shopping, and cooking/cleaning. Family in town that you see once a year, or realizing how truly dysfunctional the people around you are and that you have no idea how you are connected. Yes, the list can go on and on and on.

So here's my scoop on it, and the reason New Years Day is so important for me to teach as a yogi, teacher and most significantly -a human! We all have stuff, we all have baggage and we all have a journey and just because the clock strikes 12, all that chaos from the year before  will NOT disappear, but here's the good news-you can make some changes!!

Instead of Resolutions, I like to refer to them as Goals! Make them for yourself. Don't cram ridiculous time lines on them either. Sure, don't be lazy and say next year by this time...no that's extreme. Perhaps baby steps into it. One of the biggest accomplishments is self awareness and I can say if I learned anything for myself this year -it was just that. Realizing when I am making awesome choices, when I am reverting to old patterns, and when I am worrying about things that are far out of my control. Take some action with yourself, and know we all have our challenges and that's ok!

Now the key ingredient-your intention behind your goal!!! Why? What or who would it benefit? You-should be the answer! Why would it make you healthier physically, mentally, humanistically? Truly dive into the mere fact of why this came to your mind. Perhaps its a tough one like a loved one that you may have to love from a distance, maybe its an addiction that each time something goes wrong you jump back on it, or maybe it is something like not eating the whole cake and being ok with the 1 piece. Taking control of whats going on in your life, right here right now. Maybe you are even holding on so tightly to something, that you are not realizing if you just let it go things might get easier in the interim. Sure, it may seem bleak at first...but beauty will eventually shine thru.

Remember friends, the only constant is change. Yup, I said it...CHANGE! We just have to stop fighting it. Just like a season will eventually end so will our circumstance, pain or disarray.

What I will say to you now, you will either do or you will just continue to live your life as you have. Make some goals, some changes, and some positive thoughts for the New Year...now the tough part, put some TRUE intention behind it. LOVE yourself-there's only one you, and there will only ever be one you. Life is so short, this is the only moment we are guaranteed -live for today with your goals, be proud of where you are today, know you have more work to do but that's for tomorrow. We all have the capability to change..now it's up to you. You may say, "Manda, I know what the problem is already". So if the gas tank is empty and you know its empty, will you not go fill the tank because you know what the problem is?

Have faith in yourself!! Without that- you cannot have it in anyone else. Take care of you first. Take 2014 by surprise, and of course life is going to continue to happen, amazing moments, traumatic experiences, and all that life stuff, but its all in how you react to it. I truly hope that you can find some love and light for you and your TRUE self this year. I wish you all the Happiest Healthiest New Year!!
